AM Lecture 1Potential ReasonsThe Japanese culture fosters "Ganbatte", the willingness to work hard and unceasingly under extreme conditions. It is made a matter of personal pride and not looking bad in front of others. The concept of family-orientated dependence is applied to the work place, as people look to the family first for "comfort". This is also linked to the notion of lifetime employment. In addition, there is a socialising effect in Japanese culture where the outside world is perceived as threatening, encouraging further dependence and commitment to the company.
Fatally flawed management? It was previously thought that Japanese management worked because Japan was economically successful, however the reality was the complete opposite. When Japan was economically successful it hid the failure of Japanese management. Accounts of Karoshi and ijime increased during the recession, as managers became under pressure to get their company to perform, so they blamed the workforce. As a result, managers made it intolerable to work for them, so the workers would either leave or die. As the economy faltered, the weaknesses and general absence of Japanese management was exposed.
