AM Lecture 2ConclusionsThere is an inherent problem for SOE management. Ideologically SOEs represent the State, so if they are Westernised, does this undermine the role of the State? However, there seems to be a general theoretical and practical consensus that SOE management is too formalised, unresponsive and rent-seeking. This suggests that perhaps there needs to be developed a hybrid management type, blending both Chinese and Western practices. It is thought that eventually Western and Chinese management will converge to create a global style. For example, Warner (1995) referred to "HRM with Chinese characteristics", which suggests that there's been a change of thinking already. The question remains, however, as to whether there will be any more change.
