Bekaert, Francois and Verhoeven (2004) - China Steel demand

China’s souring demand for steel is causing celebration in the West’s faltering steel industries. The demand has risen 17 percent per annum, compared with the two percent rise for the rest of the world

This could be premature, however, as demand could be filled by domestic suppliers by 2010. In addition, their lower cost manufacturing skills mean that they could well compete with the more expensive Japanese, UK and US steel firms.
