Lazonick (1991) - Organisational capabilities in American industry: the rise and decline of managerial capitalism

"Organisation building is a social phenomenon". Firms in America are affected by social and political history.

From the early 19th century the mobility of labour in the US has prioritised the building of managerial structures for successful industrial enterprise. In the UK, geographic concentrations of skilled labour meant that firms were small and produced for local markets only and were not skilled at co-ordination.

Capital moved to the source of labour, while in America capital had to entice skilled labour to come to it or firms had to develop technologies which were less dependent on skilled labour (which was in short supply)

To retain these skilled workers, share options and promises of promotion were offered as an incentive to stay. Gaining commitment of managers to the firm resulted in success, as the personnel sought to further the interests of the firm.
