Zuboff (1988) - In the Age of the Smart Machine

He refers to the “informated” workplace, which is designed for the circulation of information. IT has helped increase the value of intellectual capital in the workplace and turns it into a learning organisation

Technology today aims to facilitate all employees do more comprehensive tasks and understand the business better, whereas technology was first designed to simplify tasks.

There is the issue of whether IT should be used to replace or empower people.

IT has changed the concept of time, where the “working day” means less in the global village, due to access to global communication at any time of day. As the working day has expanded, so time has contracted. Companies compete on speed, using effective co-ordination of resources to reduce the time needed to develop new products etc.
