CM Lecture 4

Management > Asian Management > Culture-organisational background > Laoban characteristics > Structure

Structure

Laoban are slightly different in structure to the typical CFB. The Chinese family, "jia" lies at the core of Laoban business structures. "Fang" refers to the sub-branches into which the firm is broken, with each branch running its own business and generating profits which it owns. This private branch money is "sifangqian", meaning that the sub units are economically autonomous and that the firm has ready accessibility of funding to other members of the family or linking families.

The relationships are informal but very stable, combining stability and flexibility, which allows firms to grow with economic strength. The structure of Laoban and the interrelationships between Fang is essentially an example of Crisis Management. This is because the firms can protect themselves against changing environments, as they can change quickly to avoid threats and take advantage of opportunities.
