Sergeant and Frenkel (1998) - Managing People in China: Perceptions of Expatriate Managers

FDI has boomed in China, which has been accompanied by an influx of expatriate managers who are responsible for organising joint ventures and subsidiaries.

Since the late 1950s the "iron rice bowl" policy has been the cornerstone of Chinese management, with people being ensured lifetime employment.

During the Cultural revolution (1966-76), a whole generation was denied any education, meaning that those aged between 30 and 45 have been poorly prepared to cope with the change of the economy into a market system.

In 1979, China's Open Door Policy eroded this system, introducing short-term contracts and giving firms the ability to fire people in order to improve efficiency.
