Mintzberg (1973) - The Nature of Managerial Work

What managers do – the myth: sitting and contemplating the long-term strategies, taking time to make the best decisions

What managers do – the reality: slaves to the moment, moving from one task to another.

A manager’s key roles:

  • Interpersonal – figurehead, leader and liaiser
  • Informational – monitor, disseminator (information to subordinates), spokesperson (information to outsiders)
  • Decisional – entrepreneur, disturbance handler, resource allocator and negotiator
