Alliances/Integration

Vertical backward/upstream integration/collaborations - these occur when a business engages with suppliers. Motivations are related to resource leveraging by improving access and control over them and improving the supply chain linkages, which improves quality control and delivery.

Vertical forward/downstream integration/collaborations - dealing with distributors and customers, this improves distribution channels, achieving better access to customers and enabling marketing synergies

Horizontal integration/collaborations - this is more about synergy than responsiveness, due to core competence leveraging, such as through brand image etc.

Diversified integration/collaborations - between the business and businesses in other industries, this relates to the leveraging of brand names and improves access to finance.
