In 1983, after the Union Carbide disaster in India, Reliance made a bid to acquire Carbide's plastics operations. Although that plan had to be scrapped due to regulation delays, the company acquired a licence to make PVC.

Between 1989 and 1992 Reliance set up facilities to manufacture LAB from kerosene and N-Paraffin and eventually entered into oil and gas in 1994.
