Conclusion

The authors believe that the M&S crisis was triggered by external factors, but was worsened by managers’ misperceptions of the firm’s capabilities and inability to understand and cope with external issues.

It is necessary to study the characters and personalities of those in charge during the crisis. For example, the board’s values and objectives before and during the crisis
