OKIS Lecture 3

Management > Organisational Knowledge and Information Systems > What is information? > Generalised model > Simplified example > Uses of information > Problems to address > Goals and questions > Recognition and administration

Recognising information

Information can be recognised and interpreted in a variety of ways:

  • Assemble elements of data
  • Process, dataflow, and decomposition diagrams
  • Compare to Data Dictionary
  • Agree naming conventions
  • Use powerful databases

Note: If you tell a database something and ask it to repeat the information back to you, its output will exactly mirror the input. If you do the same with a person, they are likely retort something slightly different

Administering information

In order to successfully manage information, a firm needs to appoint the right people and processes to implement this, including:

  • Appointing a CIO,
  • Appointing a Data Administrator
  • Set up strategic planning and clear objectives
  • Set up a Steering Group
  • Use brainstorming and workshops
  • Control this information with Data Dictionary
