Fischhoff - Getting Straight Talk Right

When people are in a crisis, facts are essential, but they need to be done correctly. Spinners trying to calm potential panic by twisting information and limiting its availability. However, research shows that ordinary people can act bravely and responsibly, particularly if they have all the available information.

Managers need to tailor information so that it fits with people's existing belief systems. This does not mean bending the truth, just said in a way that people understand and can respond to responsibly. It is up to management to co-ordinate the gathering and distribution of data.
