Scott et al. - How a Human Pandemic Could Start

Although transmission of bird flu between humans is rare and inefficient, this could change. 1918-1919 saw 50 million people killed due to a flu pandemic, which was the result of a virus mutation. However, the mortality rate was only 2%, whereas over half of the people who have contracted bird flu have died.

An important approach to limiting the spread of the disease among humans is to provide free and accessible information. A lot depends on governments, organisations and individuals to control people's exposure.
