Laudon and Laudon (1999) - Management Information Systems

Telecommunications

Telecommunications used to be over telephone lines, now a lot of it is digital data transmission between computers.

The 1996 Telecommunications Deregulation and Reform Act freed telephone companies, broadcasters and cable companies to enter into each other's markets. This has resulted in all sort of convergence and joint ventures.

The "information superhighway" is the channelling of information anywhere at high speed (such as the Internet).

Telecommunications System Components include:

  1. Computers to process information
  2. Terminals
  3. Communications channels
  4. Communications processors, like modems
  5. Communications software

Wireless

Much telecommunications is done by wireless transmission, including mobile phones, satellite communication, broadband internet and the remote control.

A satellite medium is being developed, the low orbit satellite, which travels much closer to earth than normal satellites and can pick up weaker signals from transmitters. The consume less power and cost less to launch.

"With such wireless networks, business people will be able to travel virtually anywhere in the world and have access to full communication capabilities.
