The plan

A telecommunications plan needs to be integrated into the strategic goals of the company. There are 8 steps to implementing a plan:

  1. Distance - if communication will be local then LAN will be better than WAN
  2. Range of services - such as email, EDI, teleconferencing etc
  3. Security
  4. Multiple access - whether access is required throughout the firm, or at just one or two points (for example, one videoconference room, or one on every work phone)
  5. Utilisation - frequency and volume of communications needs to be known so as to estimate the impact on the system
  6. Cost
  7. Installation issues
  8. Connectivity - how much is required to make all the components in the network communicate with each other
