OKIS Lecture 4

Management > Organisational Knowledge and Information Systems > Knowledge Management > 4Cs > Types of knowledge >Explicit and tacit knowledge > Key issues for knowledge management > Advantages

Advantages

Knowledge has boundless advantages, including to improve:

  • Efficiency of production
  • Quality and quantity produced
  • Distribution process
  • ...almost any area...
  • The corporation's ability to learn
  • Accumulate
  • Disseminate
  • Information faster than its competitors enhances differentiation, providing customer service.

All of the above advantages have a matching disadvantage, which generally revolve around being stuck within the confines of knowledge. For example, you can improve a process of production with knowledge, but you can lock yourself into those guidelines as well.

Other disadvantages include information overload and the deskilling of individuals, for example the wide use of calculators means that many people can't do arithmetic too well.

Opportunities

Some opportunities to use knowledge include CRM, accessible information on the internet, ECommerce, and digital communications.
